Kate leads the way for The Well at Great North Run

Lead Complementary Therapist at The Well for Wellbeing, Kate Cadwell is taking to the streets of Newcastle to raise much needed funds for The Well.

The Great North Run is the largest half marathon in the world, taking place annually in North East England each September. Kate will take on the 13.1 mile route for the second time and is hoping to beat her personal best.

Why has Kate chosen The Well?

As Kate is the Lead Complementary Therapist at The Well, this is the reason she has chosen to raise funds for this wonderful cause. The Well at The Core is a service for people affected by cancer in Barnsley, providing six free beauty and complementary therapies for both men and women. Therapies are delivered by appropriately trained, skilled and experienced practitioners who offer a range of therapies which promote health and well-being. Although partly funded by the government, this funding does not cover the full cost of keeping this service running therefore The Well also heavily relies on the donations received from their local community. Therefore, Kate has decided it is her turn to act!

Kate said “After only running for 3 years, in 5 weeks time I will be undertaking the famous Great North Run, alongside Mo Farrar (I wish!)  for the second time! This massive event in the running calendar is undertaken by many hoping to raise a few pounds for their chosen charity, so this year I have chosen The Well.”

“As a therapist at The Well for Wellbeing at The Core, I know how much support it provides for patients in Barnsley who have had a cancer diagnosis. Providing therapeutic support from diagnosis, through treatment & beyond the Well is a safe space for patients to come, relax and leave their worries behind, whilst our expert team of therapists offer treatments and self help support to allow them to live as normally as possible during what can be a very traumatic time. Partially funded by the NHS/CCG it would be great to contribute to the running of this much needed & well used service.”

“Running 13.1 miles is no mean feat for me, so please donate to help keep me going… every little helps!”

If you would like to sponsor Kate and help raise vital funds, you can visit her Just Giving page here.

Choir raises money for cancer therapy centre

A choir raised £400 from a concert and donated it to a centre which offers complementary therapies for cancer patients in Barnsley.

The Ilesha Choir donated the funds to The Well at The Core on County Way, Barnsley, which offers treatments like oriental massage and beauty therapies.

Highly praised by patients, The Well offers reiki, brow and lash enhancements and a tailor-made service to teach people how to tie scarves and fit hats and wigs. It also offers advice on how to look after your scalp and hair during and after treatment for cancer.

The Ilesha Choir performed the fundraising concert – with an uplifting programme – on 23 March at St Paul’s Church, Barnsley. Tickets were £6 each and sold by The Well and Cancer Services at Barnsley Hospital. Although partly funded by the government, funding for The Well does not cover the full cost of keeping the service running, therefore The Well also heavily relies on community donations.

Kate Cadwell, a Complementary Therapist at The Well, said: “It was a truly fantastic evening of entertainment and we are delighted the choir chose to support The Well. The amount they raised is fantastic and will have a real positive impact on people in Barnsley affected by cancer who attend The Well. I left feeling very happy and uplifted as I am positive everyone else who attended did. “

The Ilesha Choir is a relatively new choir formed in 2010. It was named after Sheila Hoddle (Ilesha is an anagram of Sheila), a pianist and advisor to the choir, who has sadly died. Members sing in three-part harmony, soprano, mezzo-soprano and contralto and the repertoire includes a wide range of pieces including songs from the shows and traditional tunes, as well as modern.

The next choir concert is on 6 July at St Paul’s Church, Barnsley, when the choir will be raising funds so members can buy more equipment such as sheet music.

The Well receive local support from BOS

The Well for Wellbeing gets a helping hand

Local Barnsley office supply company, BOS have chosen to support The Well for Wellbeing service for people living with cancer with a donation of £600.

The Well for Wellbeing service provides, free beauty and complementary therapies for both men and women affected by cancer from The Core in Barnsley

The aim of each therapy is to promote health and well-being in individuals, enabling them to live a life beyond a cancer diagnosis and the benefits are not just physical but also psychological.

Elliot Batty, Managing Director of BOS, on Summer Lane states “We choose a charity every year. What appealed to BOS this year was that The Well for Wellbeing services provide not only physical but also psychological assistance to those going through a traumatic time in their lives.” Elliot continues “Unfortunately more and more of us are affected by cancer one way or another so our contribution seemed fitting”.

Lisa Calvert, Charity Development Manager at Barnsley Hospital Charity who administer all donations to The Well for Wellbeing Service said “The Well service makes a real difference to people in Barnsley at a very difficult time in their lives; this donation from BOS is greatly appreciated. It will also help us spread awareness of the wonderful work that the team of staff and volunteers do at The Well.”

Alison Spencer, Business Support for Cancer Services at Barnsley Hospital explained “The support from BOS came out of the blue and will help The Well continue its great work. Although The Well is partly funded by the government this funding does not cover the full cost of keeping this service running therefore the help BOS offers will assist us in many ways from publicising what we do to supporting our fundraising efforts.”

Therapies include Acupuncture, Hypnotherapy, Massage, Reiki, Reflexology, paraffin wax, Shiatsu and a range of beauty therapies. There is also a tailor-made headwear service located on the chemotherapy unit where patients can buy hats & scarves at cost price and learn how to tie scarves following chemotherapy. The service is also supported by volunteers, some of whom have been affected by cancer; and who provide a wonderful meet and greet and reception service.

If you would like more information on what The Well offers, or would like to raise funds for this invaluable service or even volunteer then visit www.barnsleyhospitalcharity.co.uk/the-well or call Barnsley Hospital Charity on 01226 431650.

So, I’m more than happy to be doing what I see as my fair share of contributing towards recognising these real life unsung heroes.”

‘Giant money box’ scoops £60,000 for Tiny Hearts Appeal

A BIG thank you to the hospital’s staff, patients and public who’ve made a donation into our Tiny Hearts Appeal Incubator – no matter how big or small. The incubator has now raised a staggering £60,000!

The initiative was officially launched at World Prematurity Day on 17 November 2015. It has proven to be a huge success ever since, contributing significantly to the charity’s Tiny Hearts Appeal. The current total stands at £621,423.84.

Could you host our 2nd incubator?

We are very lucky to have secured a second collection incubator! We would love more businesses to take our second incubator for a week or even a month to help us raise vital funds for the appeal. If you are interested in hosting the incubator and would like to rise to the challenge to see how much you can raise, please get in touch with the charity.

What is the Tiny Heart Appeal?

A campaign to raise £1 million to support the development of a new, state of the art neonatal unit. The unit is for babies who need special care and will be situated alongside the Barnsley Birthing Centre. This means that the babies will not have to be exposed to different environments and different temperature changes. Nor will they have to be taken into an elevator. Premature babies are underdeveloped and have to be given extra help for their tiny bodies to cope with the outside world. They can spend up to 13-14 weeks on the unit. The care on the unit is focused around allowing the babies to fully develop. The current unit needs to be updated and expanded in order to allow parents to have proper bonding time with their babies.

The incubator is acting as a giant money box to raise funds for the appeal. It has been sealed and secured by the Trust’s engineering department to ensure it is safe.

If you’d like to support the Tiny Hearts Appeal, you can make a donation online at www.justgiving.com/tinyhearts or alternatively, contact the charity on 01226 431650.
